The Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2026 represented a landmark event in the show's history, marking its 10th anniversary since its inception in 2017. The anime streaming platform revealed that the awards ceremony saw unparalleled success this year, with a record 73 million votes cast by fans worldwide to decide the winners this year. But as the ecstasy of the biggest anime event wears off and sanity takes charge again, an alarming issue can be seen glaring right into the eyes.
Out of dozens of nominated series and films representing some of the most diverse, artistically daring, and emotionally raw stories of the year, a mere eight anime franchises walked away with 27 of the night's major awards.

While it is debatable if winners across categories were deserving or not, the concentration of awards to a handful of titles is surely not. It represents a gap in the system - a gap that lets a meritorious nominee get snubbed under the name of a more established IP. Only eight anime got 27 awards out of 32, and still no one is asking the right question: Is the global fan-voting system turning the industry’s most prestigious awards into a closed-loop popularity contest?
This question starts to make sense more and more if one goes deeper into the stats. Right now, we are talking about 27 out of 32 awards going to only 8 anime. But a closer look reveals that out of these 27, 15 went to only three anime. And a further closer look reveals that 7 out of these 15 went to a single anime - Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle.
The point of concern is not about the quality of these winners, as the eight anime that dominated the awards are powerhouses in animation, storytelling, and other technical aspects. The issue lies in the complete exclusion of smaller, but impactful titles like Takopi’s Original Sin and The Summer Hikaru Died. After getting 7 and 8 nominations respectively, we are somehow to believe that they were not deserving of a single accolade after all.
The root cause of the problem is obviously the voting system that leaves room for the popularity bias.
The systematic bias of Anime Awards
As many would know, the Crunchyroll Anime Awards employ a hybrid voting system where votes from a panel of expert judges carry 70% weightage, while fan votes carry the rest 30%. Still, this is enough to influence the decision in favor of popular legacy titles like Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia, which have established a massive global fanbase over the years.

To prevent lesser-known or relatively new titles from being trampled at the feet of these global titans, the Anime Awards must do away with the fan voting system, or maybe decrease the weightage significantly, to keep the decisions mostly merit-based. Crunchyroll should also consider introducing specialized categories that allow smaller, independent masterpieces to stand on their own merits. Let us just hope this stat does not replicate itself in any way next year.
