It is not every day that an anime once hailed as the spiritual successor to Dragon Ball Z suddenly storms back into the spotlight. But that is exactly what is happening with Toriko, the wild gourmet adventure that once dominated the early 2010s shōnen scene. With its explosive battles, monstrous creatures, and a world where the rarest meals are worth risking life itself, the legendary Gourmet Hunter Toriko, forever chasing the ingredients for his ultimate full-course meal, now seems ready to step back onto the stage for a new generation of viewers.

And now, years after its original run till 2014, the Japanese anime Toriko is preparing for a fresh wave of audiences as it returns to streaming once again in 2026.

Originally produced by Toei Animation, Toriko first aired from April 3, 2011, to March 30, 2014, delivering a total of 147 action-packed episodes. The anime quickly became one of the standout shōnen titles of the early 2010s, often compared to Dragon Ball Z for its explosive battles and over-the-top power scaling.

Now the legendary Gourmet Hunter is gearing up for another adventure, as Netflix prepares to add the anime to its catalogue on March 15, 2026, in the United States and Canada, bringing Toriko’s world of monstrous ingredients and ultimate full-course meals back to viewers.

Created by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro, Toriko is based on the manga that ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2008 to 2016 and has circulated more than 30 million copies worldwide by 2023. When the anime launched in 2011, it aired in the same Dream 9 programming block once used by Dragon Ball Z, even featuring a special 2013 crossover with One Piece. That promotional push is exactly why many fans began viewing Toriko as a spiritual successor to the classic DBZ-style adventure anime.

Before the anime climbs up Netflix's charts much like the One Piece live action adaptations, one has to understand what made Toriko such a peculiar feast in the first place.

Here is what the Dragon Ball Z Successor Toriko is all about

Set in a world where cuisine defines power and prestige, Toriko follows the legendary Gourmet Hunter Toriko as he journeys across the Human World, home to only about 30% of the planet’s modern civilization, before venturing into the perilous Gourmet World, a vast region of extreme climates where he hunts the rarest ingredients imaginable.

Joined by the timid chef Komatsu, Toriko hunts extraordinary delicacies, from the colossal Regal Mammoth to the coveted God ingredient, to complete his ultimate full-course meal. Along the way, the duo faces monstrous wildlife and the sinister Gourmet Corp, a powerful organization determined to control the world’s food supply.
