The Russo Brothers are all in for a Captain America Infinity Stones movie. For years, the closing moments of Avengers: Endgame left Marvel Cinematic Universe fans with one of the most tantalizing unanswered questions in superhero cinema. While viewers eventually caught up with an elderly Cap handing his iconic shield to Sam Wilson after his solitary, untold odyssey across the cosmos and the multiverse, the monumental hurdles, bureaucratic cosmic pitfalls, and inevitable skirmishes he faced along the way remained entirely off-screen.

Now, addressing the long-running fan theory about how that epic mission unfolded, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have finally broken their silence, admitting that a movie about Steve Rogers returning the Infinity Stones could be a possibility.

While recently talking to CBR, Joe and Anthony Russo addressed the widespread chatter about a Captain America movie involving his journey to return all the Infinity Stones to their rightful places. When asked if Steve Rogers should get a self-contained story around his efforts to return the Infinity Stones, Joe Russo replied:

“I think that's a great idea. How about a movie?”

And it is not the only time the Russo Brothers have tinkered with the idea; they have mulled over the reality of this storyline fitting into an MCU feature in the past too. When asked about his thoughts on Steve Rogers’ encounter with Red Skull on Vormir, Joe Russo responded positively. 

“We did have that conversation. I think we toyed around with an idea of like, ‘Is there a montage where he puts the stones back?’ We felt like it just played past the ending.”

“We did circle it for a long time, that idea,” Anthony Russo added.

That concept holds a lot of weight. Before Chris Evans' major involvement in Avengers: Doomsday came to light, it felt like an ideal vehicle to bring him back to the franchise. Such a project would function as a self-contained narrative, leaving the primary MCU timeline untouched while delivering more of Evans in his defining role, and the Russo Brothers also agreed while conversing with CBR.

Given their strong working relationship with Chris Evans, their roots launching into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Captain America franchise, and the narrative breadcrumbs they already planted, the timeline fits. Furthermore, Steve Rogers remaining in the past with Peggy Carter inevitably created temporal anomalies - a premise teased by the appearance of Loki in the Endgame encore credits - a thread that is set to be explored further in Avengers: Doomsday.

So, if one goes by this theory, then Steve Rogers’ return to Doomsday was crucial simply because he is the reason the entire event takes place. Furthermore, the four minutes added to Avengers: Endgame Encore helps to ease the audience into this new transition, providing enough context for the Doomsday timeline to make sense.
