Nearly a decade after the headline-making disappearance, Sherri Papini’s story continues to attract attention. What started as a reported kidnapping in 2016 eventually unraveled into one of the most widely discussed hoax cases in recent memory, ending in criminal charges and a prison sentence. With new public interest in the case, many are now asking where Papini is today and what happened to the story after the truth came out. 

Meanwhile, though her prison sentence ended, Papini continues to deal with the lasting consequences of the case. 

Years after admitting to her 2016 fake kidnapping, Sherri Papini is back in the limelight. The California mom pleaded guilty to making false statements and mail fraud after investigators determined she had faked the abduction. With the case getting new attention, many are wondering where Papini is now. 

Her disappearance sparked headlines, and a statewide search was initiated for her. Sherri was spotted walking along a road in Yolo County, California, roughly 150 miles from her home, on November 24, 2016, 22 days after she had disappeared. Papini is still in California under supervised release until 2026, and she is still dealing with the fallout from her kidnapping hoax.

In 2022, Sherri was charged with making false statements to a federal agent. She admitted the charge and was jailed for 18 months, until August 2023. However, she still owes more than $340,000 in restitution to state and federal agencies. 

“There was no consent. There were the injuries that occurred, the bites on my thigh, the footprint on my back, the brand, the melting of my skin,” she alleged in the four-part docu-series Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie, which debuted May 26 on Netflix. 

Authorities said after a six-year investigation, they found Papini had made up the kidnapping. Additionally, she was hiding out at her ex-boyfriend James Reyes’ apartment in Costa Mesa, California. However, she later said, Reyes had allegedly kidnapped her.

Even today, Papini’s story continues to spark debate and renewed scrutiny in the true-crime world. 

Sherri Papini disappeared on November 2, 2016, on her routine jog. Her then-husband, Keith Papini, reported her missing, triggering a nationwide search with the help of the FBI. Three weeks later, a motorist discovered Sherri about 150 miles from her home in Redding, California, and she was reunited with her family on Thanksgiving Day.

Sherri was found emaciated, wearing chains, and visibly bruised. Questioned by police, she said that she had been abducted at gunpoint by two masked Hispanic women and was savagely assaulted in captivity. Then, investigators began to search for her alleged captors, who they were led to believe were Spanish speakers. 

“She fell into stereotypes about the Latino community that is far too prevalent in the population at large, but clearly, she was also counting on law enforcement relying upon stereotypes,” Thomas Saenz, the president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said in a CNN interview in 2022. 

The case drew a lot of media attention, but experts in law enforcement doubted her story because of the far-fetched details and inconsistencies in the purported abduction.  Even after her release from prison, Papini still has to deal with the legal and financial fallout from the case. Nearly a decade after the disappearance first hit the headlines, the fallout from the hoax continues to follow Papini far beyond the courtroom.
