The Crash on Netflix is based on a real-life incident that happened in Strongsville, Ohio. The documentary centers on Mackenzie Shirilla, a young lady who killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend Davion Flanagan when she crashed her car into a brick wall at 100 mph. The incident took place in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022.

Shirilla was found guilty of both murder and aggravated vehicular homicide after what appeared to be an accident led to her being convicted of murder. Shirilla received a life sentence with the possibility of release after 15 years. When Shirilla drove her Toyota Camry into a brick structure at the age of 17, she was the only one who survived, although she suffered severe injuries and was admitted to the hospital. Flanagan was 19, and Russo was 20.

The documentary examines the criminal case in which the prosecution accused her of deliberate murder, which eventually led to her conviction. In addition to telling her narrative, the Netflix documentary has drawn attention to her parents, who continue to publicly declare her innocence.

But how did she go from a victim to an accused and then ultimately the convicted?

How did Shirilla get caught?

The first basis of accusation was demonstrated by the fact that she never tried to break or take her foot off the throttle. Additionally, there was proof that she had previously argued with Russo and threatened to crash the car. Furthermore, Shirilla claimed that she had a seizure just prior to the collision and that she was physically incapable of preventing it.

In an even stranger instance, Shirilla and her mother attempted to prevent investigators from knowing what they were saying by speaking in Pig Latin. At this point, she inquired as to whether she might claim to have had a seizure.
