Cartoons are supposed to be, well…cartoony. Meant for a casual watch, adult cartoons just love getting embroiled in controversies. Can you count the number of times South Park or Family Guy was part of a huge controversy? But Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty largely played safe until a particular episode caused quite a stir among its fanbase. 

The grandpa and the grandson have taken the viewers on too many wild adventures. These adventures were always enjoyable for the viewers, although not too much for the paranoid Morty. This one time, Morty placed a bet with his granddad, and it went horribly wrong. All he wanted was trauma-free fun, but all he got were emotional scars.

After a harrowing experience in an alternate dimension, Morty strikes a deal with Rick to go on an adventure that he gets to decide. They travel to a fantasy world in episode 5: Meeseeks and Destroy, as per the deal. But while Rick was playing cards in the tavern, Morty fought off his molester, Jellybean, in the bathroom.

A traumatized Morty only wanted to return home after the incident, but Rick was intelligent enough to put two and two together. When a villager outside the tavern introduces Morty’s sexual offender as the benevolent King Jellybean, Rick shoots him with a laser through the portal.

Although it was disturbing to watch, creator Justin Roiland had actually planned to keep it as realistic as possible.

He intended to unsettle the viewers but had no intention of offending or hurting anyone. Well, he succeeded because the scene still resides in the fans’ memory, and they still squirm at the thought of it.
