“I have this freedom from beholding"- Ye Sees His Boycott by Big Brands as a Blessing in Disguise

The list of consequences that Ye, aka Kanye West, faced from airing out his controversial opinions, could fill a book. Not only did it push the rapper into hibernation from the industry and lie low for an extended period, but his political stance also caused him to lose some of his biggest brand partnerships- the most significant of which was Adidas. While his fallout with Adidas was a public affair, it was merely the tip of the iceberg when it came to the industry’s response to Ye’s opinions.

Ye was also reportedly dropped by many collaborators, agencies, and fashion lines. In fact, even his wax figure at Madame Tussauds in London was shelved. One might think this would break the rapper. Turns out, he is rather relieved by the boycott.

Back in 2022, Ye sat for an interview with Candace Owens, but it was only recently released. In the interview, Ye addressed his most heated controversies, which led to his ultimate alienation by the industry two years back. Talking about the phase, Ye shared that he was "happy" with brands pulling off their support. He stated the reason, saying, "I have this freedom from beholding to these brands that say we only rock with you under these conditions". Ye had earlier talked about being allegedly exploited at the hands of Adidas.

"I feel super disrespected in this partnership," Ye wrote in a text message to Adidas, as per The Times. Earlier this year, the 'Donda' rapper also accused the sportswear giant of trying to "destroy" him in an explosive Instagram rant. Ye claimed that Adidas unfairly sued him over business disagreements and is still making money with his name, despite their partnership ending long ago. Nonetheless, even in that phase, when almost everyone had turned their back on Ye, he had one friend, and collaborator sticking by him.

Ye, in a podcast, shared how Ty Dolla $ign became his biggest pillar of support in the industry when things took a downturn.

Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s friendship is a decade strong. When the 'Graduation' maestro was asked on Big Boy TV why he chose to team up with $ign on 'Vultures,' Ye revealed that the ‘Paranoid’ rapper had his back when “a million people told him not to.” This loyalty shines through in $ign's own remarks about Ye. In June, the producer told Billboard he could not care less about the chatter surrounding Ye.

"I don't give a f--k about what people were talking about," said $ign. He then went on to declare Ye as the "best artist of this generation". The producer also pointed to the public’s mixed feelings about Ye as the root cause of his album falling short of expectations. While the internet might disagree with that, $ign's commitment to Ye, amid all controversies, is definitely a breath of fresh air in the competitive rap industry.
