James Gunn collaborated with Spotify to craft a compelling playlist for Superman fans, inviting them to imagine what their favorite characters from the movie might listen to. The director unveiled an elaborate list of 63 songs featuring artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Chelsea Wolfe, Britney Spears, and, of course, Taylor Swift. And while the former two names appear to have found only a single feature on the acclaimed filmmaker’s playlist, the latter, found five of her pop ballads — 'Blank Space,' 'Me!,' 'Cruel Summer,' 'You Belong With Me,' and 'Shake it Off' — included.
As James Gunn noted, fans will have to wonder for themselves which Metropolis characters are linked to which tracks. While that detail remains uncertain, one thing is clear — the playlist, and Taylor Swift in particular, adds emotional relatability and a new layer of texture to the superhero narrative. That said, while some fans are mostly appreciative of the inundating details concerning the soon-to-be-released film, others appear not so happy with the stretched marketing, arguing it is ruining the surprise for them.

Keeping the fans hooked with on-set pictures, behind-the-scenes footage, and more is not uncommon for big-budget films, as investors often try to leverage them for buzz. However, a recent discourse on X among DC sleuths let the makers know it is not working with this particular Superman installment — and they might be right. With every new snap, teaser, or blurry on-set footage, they claim they are more than spoiled and do not find themselves buying popcorn in multiplexes come July 11.

Now, with the aforementioned playlist as well, there is a chance the discourse might resurface, denouncing James Gunn’s enthusiasm as an extended social media campaign. Especially with the pop-heavy Taylor Swift feature, it could spark conversation about Gunn making David Corenswet’s turn as Superman chirpier. Fans are, after all, used to seeing a brooding version of the superhero in Henry Cavill, for years, led by Zack Snyder. With the playlist drop, fans might be rethinking what they signed up for.
