Ryan Reynolds Opens Up on “improvised militia” Upbringing, Comparing to His Own Children’s Toned-Down Version
Ryan Reynolds is not one to hold back his hilariously sharp wit, and that is all the secret sauce behind his superstar status that resonates with millennials and Gen Z alike. He has turned humor into his ultimate sidekick, making every path he walks in work or life a laughter riot. But his cheeky charm really skyrocketed when he compared his wild upbringing, which felt like living under a militant boot camp, to the smooth, cushy, and laid-back parenting style he is now using for his kids.
Sure, it is no brain teaser to see how parenting has evolved, with every parent worldwide echoing, back-in-my-day stories. But leave it to Reynolds to sprinkle in some laughter instead of just seriousness.

According to PEOPLE's latest report, Ryan Reynolds appeared at HubSpot’s INBOUND tech conference in Boston, where he hilariously drew the line between his parenting style with Blake Lively and the one his parents used. The father of four joked that his kids are living on “easy street,” highlighting just how different today’s parenting is from his wild upbringing, which he describes as “an improvised militia.”
Reynolds commenced his talk by reflecting on the “scarcity mindset” he developed growing up, which he only figured out to navigate as an adult. Reynolds pointed out that his kids totally lack this mindset, mainly because parenting has become way softer since his days. But there is no need to get him wrong since he is not complaining. Instead, he sees these changes as a positive reminder to be “perfectly compassionate.”
Before this, Reynolds shared some golden parenting wisdom he picked up from Shawn Levy, the genius director behind the biggest R-rated flick ever starring the Canadian—Deadpool & Wolverine.

Just before the world went wild for Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds spoke with PEOPLE this June and dropped some wisdom he got from the showbiz maestro, Shawn Levy. Reynolds shared that Levy opened his eyes to the fact that people love to brag about their wins, but it is just as crucial for kids to see their parents’ losses, too. Reynolds explained that life does not always go as planned, no matter how hard you hustle.
According to Reynolds, kids need to witness their parents stumbling and making mistakes, not just basking in victory, because those blooper moments teach way more than the wins ever could. So, while he totally gets the evolution of parenting and its necessity, Reynolds believes it is vital to show parents as real, relatable humans. That way, kids can grow up with empathy and avoid falling into that scarcity mindset trap.
