Making, acting in, and watching spy films is not everybody’s cup of tea. However, there are distinguished franchises and filmmakers who have successfully created a beautiful platform for the genre. One of these filmmakers is Matthew Vaughn, who is coming up with yet another spy-thriller, Argylle, featuring Henry Cavill and Sam Rockwell. While Vaughn openly talks about his admiration for the genre, he also thinks it needs changing in a big way.
Continuing his ranting against the spy trope, the English director picked alternate castings to The Witcher star and his lead co-star in his upcoming flick.

The Kick-Ass director appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to talk about his forthcoming film, where he talked about his version of spy films. Talking about his own flick, Vaughn revealed if anyone else would have created Argylle, they would have chosen Brad Pitt as the top spy with Tom Cruise as the other one. He said, “You need the contrast and reality of both worlds, and that’s where Hollywood gets it wrong.”
Justifying his statement, the director added Hollywood would think casting Cruise and Pitt would be a definite hit. However, in reality, when the audience watches the flick, it does not make sense, leaving the audience disappointed. He went on to talk about how a great spy should be by citing examples of his own lead actors from the 2024 film. According to Matthew Vaughn, a spy should not be noticeable.
Therefore, he chose the perfect cast by choosing Sam Rockwell. Because, he said, if Rockwell would enter the room, one would not notice him. However, if the Superman star walked into the room, everyone would be helpless but take note of the actor. Praising Rockwell, Vaughn approved him as a “proper super spy.” To add more of his own elements to create a different spy trope, Vaughn made his movie a meta-fictional adventure.

Based on a yet-to-be-published book, Argylle has a spy character from the book who confronts the author in her reality. To explain this concept of meta-fictional adventure, Vaughn brought in the Harry Potter book, imagining the wizard from the third book coming out to confront the author. The trailer of the movie evidently portrayed this very element interestingly.
Vaughn expressed his desire to destroy the James Bond franchise to give shape to his own spy trope. He already has a plan to create his own world to make the changes he wants to see in the genre. But for now, moving ahead with his own world of spies, Vaughn promised fans an adventurous ride with Argylle.
