14 years after Girl Meets World aired, former cast members are spilling the tea on what it was like behind the scenes. Producer Frank Pace recalled one particularly difficult table read in which young stars Sabrina Carpenter and Rowan Blanchard were allegedly brought to tears. This happened, creator Michael Jacobs gave them a harsh critique.
“Michael was fun for me to work with because he was a challenge. He was a nightmare for me to work with because he was a challenge. Same reason,” in an interview with Danielle Fishel, Pace recalls, before recounting the “never to be forgotten table read” at the start of Girl Meets World.
“You blocked it out because Michael was horrible. He just reamed all the young cast. He didn’t think they upheld the tradition of ‘Boy Meets World’ and Rowan was crying, and Sabrina was crying,” he then alleged.
For context, Boy Meets World spin-off, Girl Meets World, follows Riley Matthews as she navigates her friends, family, and school. Riley, with the help of her best friend, Maya Hart, makes her way through the trials of adolescence, learning important lessons about identity, relationships, and responsibility. The series balances comedy and meaningful moments while carrying on the legacy of its predecessor for a new generation of viewers.
While Girl Meets World introduced a new generation, its influence has extended well beyond its original run.

During the same interview, Rider Strong revisits Girl Meets World in Doc Meets World, reflecting on the highs and lows of his time on the series. He also noted that he eventually distanced himself from creator Michael Jacobs. Danielle Fishel then shared her hopes for the show’s creative direction as she wanted the series to be more about female friendship and self-improvement.
Fishel thought the show could give young viewers a different perspective. She also noted that there were creative differences as the series progressed. Jacobs told Fishlel that the true love story would be the friendship between the characters of Carpenter, who is now eyeing Hollywood return and Rowan.

The show was well-received for successfully continuing the legacy of Boy Meets World while introducing a new generation of characters. Both critics and audience appreciated the relationship between Matthews and Hart, as well as the acting of Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter. However, the use of romanticism and love triangles in subsequent seasons was viewed negatively by some people.
Girl Meets World was considered to be an exceptional Disney Channel show that paid attention to friendship, self-development, and coming-of-age topics, while Doc Meets World gave another dimension to this series’ legacy. Although the show can be remembered with nostalgia, the documentary sheds light on the problems and challenges experienced by the creators and characters while working on the project. Thus, both sides give a more profound insight into the Disney Channel series, comparing the show’s legacy among the audience to that of the creators.
