Eight years after Hereditary turned family trauma into one of modern horror’s most unforgettable nightmares, Ari Aster recently explained why a prequel may never happen. The Graham family’s tragic downfall and the sinister mythology surrounding Paimon have sparked years of speculation about a possible continuation of the story. Yet while fans have long hoped to return to that unsettling world, Ari Aster appears far less eager to reopen the door.

And while the idea of exploring Hereditary’s dark mythology may sound tempting, Ari Aster appears unconvinced that the timing has ever been right.

Recently, during a Q&A following a special screening of Hereditary at the Egyptian Theatre, Ari Aster disclosed that he had actually written a prequel to the 2018 nightmare, a revelation that is sure to intrigue longtime fans. However, any excitement was quickly tempered when Aster admitted that it had never felt like the “right time” to move forward with the project. Stressing that the script explores events before the original film rather than continuing its story, the director suggested that the prequel remains firmly stuck in limbo for now.

“I wrote a prequel to this. It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel, so I don’t know where this goes.” Aster told at the Egyptian Theatre.

The hesitation is understandable, given the film’s reputation. Released in 2018, Hereditary followed the Graham family as they became entangled in a disturbing web of grief, generational trauma, and occult forces linked to the demon Paimon. The film earned widespread acclaim and became a breakout success for both Aster and A24, with many critics and fans still regarding it as one of the defining horror films of the past decade.

The prequel may never see the light of day, but Hereditary continues to cast a shadow over the horror genre nearly eight years later.

Why Hereditary remains modern Horror’s most unsettling nightmare?

Hereditary was never just another possession story. Beneath its shocking twists lay a carefully constructed mythology surrounding the demon Paimon, secret cults, and a family seemingly doomed long before the film even began. That layered storytelling transformed the movie into a puzzle for horror fans, spawning years of theories, online discussions, and renewed calls for a sequel or prequel. Combined with a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and more than $90 million at the global box office, the film quickly evolved from an indie horror gamble into one of A24’s defining successes.

The film’s lasting impact was also driven by its unforgettable performances. Toni Collette’s portrayal of Annie Graham is still widely regarded as one of the greatest horror performances of the century, while Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne helped turn the Graham family’s descent into pure nightmare fuel. More importantly, Hereditary launched Ari Aster into the upper tier of modern filmmakers, paving the way for projects such as Midsommar, Beau Is Afraid, and, most recently, Eddington.

And even today, as the creator is ready to leave the story behind, the film remains a horror touchstone, one that fans clearly are not ready to stop talking about even after eight years.
