His latest playground is Agent of Shadows, a pocket-sized spy thriller where trouble arrives in portrait mode.

Speaking with The Dallas Morning News, Michael Hayes discussed his appearance in Agent of Shadows, WWE's collaboration with short-form drama platform ReelShort, which premiered October 23.

“Playing a p****, not far from who I am,” Hayes joked, before adding that housewives seem to enjoy the format. “I've always got along with housewives all my life.”

The production trades wrestling's giant entrance ramps for vertical videos and rapid-fire cliffhangers. Its story follows secret agent Adam Hawke, who must protect a daughter he never knew existed while disguising himself as her nanny. James Bond would probably demand hazard pay.

Hayes joined Drew McIntyre, Jacob Fatu, Booker T, Ethan Page, Nikkita Lyons, and NXT's Hank and Tank. McIntyre plays Roscoe, the agent's technology-savvy right-hand man. Despite his packed schedule, Hayes filmed for three days, with scenes often moving forward after roughly three takes.

And Hayes is hardly the only WWE veteran bringing wrestling's theatrics into a different kind of ring.

Released theatrically on October 16, the video-game adaptation opened with approximately $30.8 million domestically. By October 26, its worldwide total stood near $79.6 million against a reported $82 million production budget. Its second domestic weekend fell roughly 72%, suggesting the initial knockout punch has lost momentum.

The critical scorecard is similarly messy. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists 41% positive reviews from critics and 78% approval among verified audiences. Reviewers have criticized the chaotic storytelling and humor, while moviegoers have largely enjoyed the outrageous action and arcade nostalgia.

“I shot some stuff down there with a couple of friends of mine, and just to kind of show them that I was excited about it and try to capture some of the physicality,” he said.

“And so thankfully after that I was able to get my hands on more of the script and then just keep sending them stuff until they would either tell me to stop or you know that it was going in the right direction, and thankfully it was.”

During the interview, he recalled being nervous during the process. Finally, after much effort, Ippolito was cast as a young Sylvester Stallone in 2025. The actor has received immense praise for his performance in the film. Following its premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, the film is now gearing up for a brief theatrical release.

Apart from the appreciation for Ippolito’s performance, the film has also received an incredible rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

As the creative exits piled up, an even larger corporate plot was unfolding around HBO and Warner Bros.

Wall Street is not clapping

Investors started fretting the moment Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters chased HBO and its parent studio, and the failed bid, along with flat engagement, helped drag the stock down. That pursuit also marked the point when Sarandos began talking to Peter Rice about managing the assets of Warner Bros. The conversation picked up in recent weeks, which makes the October meeting look less sudden than it felt to Bela Bajaria, who had spent a decade at the company delivering on her promises.

YouTube pulled up a chair

YouTube now claims close to sixteen percent of television viewing in the United States, roughly double what Netflix manages. That figure also tops Disney, Amazon, Paramount+, Peacock, and Roku combined, which turns the old streaming rivalry into something closer to a polite footnote. Bloomberg suggests that comparing Hollywood services with YouTube may soon be a waste of time, since the video giant simply offers more of everything.

The suggested escape route is premium scripted film and television, the one territory YouTube has not conquered yet, although it is already folding Peacock into its subscription service. Netflix also faces big calls on sports rights and hopes to lean on international partners, in the style of its deal with French broadcaster TF1. Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos have teased plans to sell other streaming services inside the Netflix app, which would turn the home screen into a rather crowded buffet.

As the dust settles, the biggest question is whether a fresh chief content officer can change the story before the next wave of releases.

The exits of Bela Bajaria and Dan Lin treat symptoms, but the deeper task is proving Netflix can still be the place where top creators do their best work. Its unsettling body horror and self-contained narrative give Matt Hagen’s tragic transformation the space it needs to unfold without getting bogged down by DCU obligations. And while a sequel could explore Basil Karlo or introduce a grounded Gotham detective, neither possibility is a compelling enough reason to revisit a story that already stands on its own.

As it turns out, Clayface director James Watkins has no interest in shoehorning DC references into the film.

James Watkins did not want to turn Clayface into a DC Universe crossover machine. The director said the film's standalone nature was what actually drew him to the project, adding that shoehorning in connections for the sake of it would have felt gimmicky. As far as he was concerned, telling the story right was the only priority.

“I liked the standalone nature of it. I liked how it felt like it introduced a character. But I wasn’t trying to introduce the character to go, ‘OK, what next?’" he said.

"I was trying to introduce the character as a full meal in itself," Watkins further told Variety.

Watkins also shared with Variety that Clayface could have taken a more gothic route with Basil Karlo, but James Watkins and Mike Flanagan had other plans. The director explained that Flanagan’s script settled on Matt Hagen as the film’s central character. Although the film borrows elements from different versions of the comic book villain and Hollywood’s Golden Age, Watkins wanted its world to feel timeless without losing its contemporary appeal. And a Clayface sequel risks dragging out a story that already feels complete.

There is little need for a sequel to the bulldozing Clayface when the film already delivers a satisfying, tragic account of Matt Hagen’s transformation.

A Clayface sequel will not be necessary

As the story concludes, Hagen has abandoned his humanity, fully embracing the darkness within him. Moreover, the DC Universe has already explored Clayface’s future in Creature Commandos, where Matt Hagen appears as the villain fans recognize. This gives viewers a sense of what becomes of him after the events of the film, reducing the need for another instalment. Exploring the years between the two projects might offer additional details, but it would hardly be necessary. The DC Universe could benefit from letting this tragic story stand on its own.
